CONCLUSIONS FROM SERMES CRO

  1. Arthrosis is not a disease easily recognized by patients who suffer it.
  2. The prevention of osteoarthritis could be seriously reduced if we had a good education when practicing a sport.
  3. We are not aware of the state of our body until an injury appears.
  4. No one teaches us how to run or exercise properly.
  5. We begin to know our body after injuries not before.
  6. There are a high percentage of young people, professional athletes and women who suffer from osteoarthritis.
  7. There is a high percentage of the population still undiagnosed, who does not know that the disease is suffering due to ignorance of the symptoms

OSTEOARTHRITIS is a degenerative joint disease that affects both the cartilage and the bone and soft tissues of the joint. It forms part of rheumatic diseases and, within this classification, is a type of arthritis.

It can occur in the hips, knees, hands, feet and spine, the first three being the most frequent. It produces pain and directly affects the mobility and autonomy of the person who suffers it with the psychological wear that it implies. The most common task can become a major obstacle to face due to the limitations associated with pathology. In addition, it is linked to other co-morbidity problems such as hypertension or cardiovascular diseases among others.

THE SYMPTOMS of osteoarthritis are progressive and dilated in time.

In a first stage appears:

  • the pain associated with the movement and the effort to which the joint is subjected, although in this first phase the pain ceases with the rest.

In a second stage the aggravation of osteoarthritis makes:

  • the pain appears after rest and exercise, so the discomfort is more continuous and practically constant.
  • Another symptom characteristic of the disease is the progressive inability of the articular function, leading to the loss of mobility in the long run.

With the evolution of the disease can occur:

  • Bone deformations and muscular contractures that aggravate pain, as well as atrophy of the muscles surrounding the joints.

THE FIGURES OF ARTHROSIS worldwide.

  • It is estimated that 300 million people have osteoarthritis and in Spain the figure is in the 7 million of patients.
  • In addition, it is the first cause of permanent disability and the third of temporary work disability.
  • Currently, Arthrosis implies an annual average cost of 4.738 billion euros for the Spanish health system (focusing only on osteoarthritis of the knee and hip) and, despite its prevalence, remains an unknown disease for most of the Population.
